Kyoto Travel FAQs
Will a traditional kimono fit a
tall or plus-size foreigner?
Yes! Premium boutiques carry a wide range of sizes,
including wider widths and longer lengths. A skilled dresser
(Kitsukeshi) uses specific folding techniques to adjust the
garment to perfectly fit and flatter your specific body
type.
Are the traditional wooden shoes
painful to walk in?
While cheap tourist shops provide hard plastic or cheap
wood, high-end boutiques provide cushioned Zori (sandals)
with soft, wide fabric straps designed specifically for
comfortable walking around Kyoto's hills.
Should I wear a Kimono in the
summer?
In the sweltering months of July and August, you should rent
a Yukata instead. It is a lightweight, unlined cotton
garment perfect for summer festivals and keeping cool.
Do I need to tip my Kimono dresser
or local guides?
No, tipping is not practiced in Japan and can sometimes
cause confusion. The exceptional service you receive is a
matter of professional pride. A simple, polite
'Arigato gozaimasu' (Thank you) is the best way to show
appreciation.
What is the best season to visit
Kyoto for photography?
Late March to early April offers stunning cherry blossoms,
while mid-to-late November provides vibrant red maple
leaves. However, these are the most crowded times. For
serene, tourist-free temple shots, January and February are
the hidden gems.
How far in advance should I book
my kimono rental?
During peak seasons (Spring and Autumn), highly-rated
authentic boutiques book out 1 to 2 months in advance,
especially for the coveted early morning styling slots.
Booking as soon as your flights are confirmed is strongly
advised.
